“After our initial meeting it was immediately clear to us that we wanted to work with Het Borduurburo,” says Ana Montoya, designer for the high-end Dutch lingerie label Love Stories. “Martine arrived well prepared for our first meeting. She had brought along some samples she had made specially. We found them inspiring and they gave us the confidence that we could leave this large order for 400 pieces of embroidery in her capable and creative hands.”
“For the opera La Morte d’Orfeo, we needed someone at short notice, who could embroider an entire man’s suit with rhinestones. And we wanted it done in such a way that a particular colour pattern would emerge”, says Ton Joling, head of the hats department at the Dutch National Opera. “We prefer to keep everything in-house, so when we do have to outsource, we want to be one hundred per cent certain that that person has a feel for the handwork and the costume. We searched for a while and then found Martine. In her other work we not only recognised the refinement and taste, but also a sense of speed and focus in her embroidery. That’s when we knew we had found the right person.”
Boaz van Doornik, fashiondesigner, wanted to have small maple seeds on wool fabric embroidered for his menswear label, shown during the Amsterdam Fashion Week, July 2017. We first made a sample where we embroidered directly on the fabric. Finally we produced a lot of little maple seed patches, so Boaz could exactly decide where he wanted them on the suit. Because of this it literally seemed that it was blown by the wind on the suit.
“Applying embroidery techniques in my art jewelery work was new for me when I did an order at Het Borduurburo”, says Truike Verdegaal. “Like the many choices to make, concerning embroidery threads, colors, stitches, shapes, surfaces etc. Het Borduurburo could execute my designs exactly as I had in mind. I think it is important that the feeling of manual work is present despite the machine-based execution of the embroidery. And that worked out very well with Het Borduurburo.”
Lilian Driessen, the founder of fashion label Atelier Maria Lux, wanted to have a special historical piece restored. An antique and unique jacket was once completely put together by connecting small satin straps. Due to the wear and the transience of time, this fabric had become so fragile -not wearable anymore- that it was restored in a contemporary way.
In 2013 Bugaboo, high quality Dutch stroller brand, wanted to launch a new woolen blanket for their customers. There was an exclusive presentation during the International Wool Week in Amsterdam, at their concept store at Keizersgracht 500. To make the presentation even more special, hand embroidery initials were made on the spot for customers who bought the newly designed blanket.
In 2016, LAAEL, a high quality Dutch bag brand, asked if we could produce “insignias”. It had to be directly embroidered on the fabric itself, giving them “a sort of uniform badge” appearance. The outcome had to look simple & chique.
In 2012 a new fashion hotel was opened in Arnhem. Het Borduurburo was asked to embroider room number 8. For this project, we made a small scale model that we covered completely with hand embroidery. The scale model was photographed and with these pictures, the wallpaper was designed and enlarged glass beads (hand-blown by the Nationaal Glasmuseum Leerdam).
